The episodic story centers on Duncan Macleod, born in the Highlands of Scotland who, through a magical intervention, has become immortal. Living for over 400 years, he has seen empires crumble and loved ones age and die, while he himself retains the vigor and visage of youth.
But Duncan is not the only Immortal. There are others as well, warriors all, who live through time, battling one another when their paths cross and absorbing their opponent's life force when they are victorious in beheading their adversary.
